ARTHRITIS / PREHAB PROGRAMS FOR TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT
Physical Therapy Treatment for Arthritis: Treatment in physical therapy can address multiple impairments including loss of motion, strength deficits, pain, joint protection, patient education and even assistance with weight reduction which has been shown to improve arthritis pain. Therapy employs exercise, manual therapy techniques, joint protection instruction and bracing as well as the use of modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, heat and ice as needed. Physical therapy is commonly used both before and after arthritis related surgeries and at times may be able to assist with postponing or preventing the need for surgical interventions.

McKENZIE METHOD
Also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, the McKenzie Method is a philosophy of active patient involvement and education for back, neck and extremity problems. The key distinction is its initial assessment component—a safe and reliable means to accurately reach a diagnosis and only then make the appropriate treatment plan. Rarely are expensive tests required, Certified MDT clinicians have a valid indicator to know right away whether—and how—the method will work for each patient.
Understanding the McKenzie Method: A Statement for Patients
What will the McKenzie Method do for you?
The McKenzie Method Educates, Encourages, and Empowers the patient to use self management skills to control and resolve current symptoms and to reduce the recurrence and severity of future attacks.
The McKenzie Philosophy supports the belief that in most instances spinal pain is mechanical in origin. The well trained McKenzie Practitioner, through the use of a comprehensive mechanical evaluation establishes the nature of the mechanical condition. The McKenzie Diagnosis enables your practitioner to develop an individualized self treatment program tailored to your lifestyle. It identifies whether your symptoms will respond to conservative treatment and establishes a likely time frame. The McKenzie Treatment approach educates you in the application of self treatment techniques to assist in resolution of your symptoms. The McKenzie Diagnosis and Treatment ensures that you benefit from maximum cost effectiveness. Above all it puts you in control of you Spinal Pain rather than it controlling your enjoyment of life.
Limitations of the McKenzie Method
No, not all your patients will be responders to the McKenzie Method. However, the benefit of the McKenzie Methods is that you can identify the non-responders early. The literature reports and it is my clinical experience that some 80% of patients with mechanical spinal pain will respond. Of those, 85% respond favorably in 10 to 14 days. Variables that commonly affect these outcomes are the practitioners level of McKenzie training and patient compliance. Where the McKenzie Method identifies patients whose symptoms do not respond, a referral to a spinal or orthopedic surgeon for further assessment would be the next appropriate step.
Non-responders may also fall into the group of other Spinal Syndromes such as Canal Stenosis, Spondylolisthesis: Nerve Root Entrapment. The McKenzie trained therapist with their knowledge of aggravating mechanical factors, removal of postural stresses, instruction in balancing mechanical forces, and improvement in general body conditioning can all be utilized as alternatives to the more specific exercise prescription.
An important role for the McKenzie Practitioner is to identify those patients who need the skills of other health professionals, and be prepared to refer the patient on. Thus avoiding long periods of inappropriate and expensive management.

BREATHING SCIENCE
Few people, lay or professional, know that (1) breathing directly regulates body chemistry, including pH, electrolyte balance, blood flow, hemoglobin chemistry, and kidney function, and that (2) breathing is a behavior subject to the same principles of learning as any other behavior, including the role of motivation, emotion, attention, perception, and memory. Bringing together these two simple facts means bringing together the biological and behavioral sciences in profoundly practical ways relevant to the lives of millions. It changes the way that we think about ourselves and our physiology.
Failure to directly address breathing as learned behavior, and how it regulates fundamental body chemistry, means leaving out the most fundamental, practical, and profound factors that account for (1) the far-reaching effects of bad breathing, as well as for (2) the surprising benefits of good breathing. “Bad” breathing can cause, trigger, exacerbate, and perpetuate symptoms and deficits of all kinds, ones that typically go “unexplained,” or are mistakenly attributed to other causes; these effects are real, not imagined. “Good” breathing, on the other hand, can bring about immensely beneficial physical, mental, and behavioral changes, ones that again may be attributed to other unrelated factors.
Unfortunately, misinformation, misconceptions, pseudoscience prescriptions, and ignorance about breathing prevent people from making good use of basic textbook knowledge. We offer our clients the solution: comprehensive educational and consulting services for observing, evaluating, and learning breathing behavior. Our services are not about diagnosis and treatment. They are about learning optimal breathing behavior through self-exploration with breakthrough technology, the CapnoTrainer®. Emphasis is on inside-out learning and intuitive experience, rather than on outside-in “treatments” and prescriptive exercises.

CELLULAR NUTRITION
Virtually all chronic degenerative diseases that plague today's world are caused or exacerbated by the deterioration of the modern diet. USANA Foods were developed to provide great-tasting, high-quality macronutrients your body needs to maintain health and feel great. These convenient, lowglycemic foods can be used along with the ESSENTIALS™ and OPTIMIZERS to complete your healthy diet. Many USANA Foods contain beneficial ingredients like dietary fiber, soy protein, and potassium - ingredients that may help prevent cancer, heart disease, and hypertension.*
To achieve and maintain a healthy body, your body's cells need specific nutrients (high-quality protein, varied fiber sources, low-glycemic carbohydrates, beneficial fats, vitamins, and minerals). When your body's cells lack these vital nutrients, they do not function properly.
We understand that good nutrition includes both micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other compounds we consume in small amounts) and macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that make up the bulk of our food). The primary goal of good nutrition is to promote lifelong good health. This state of well-being implies the optimal performance of all body systems.
THE RIGHT MACRONUTRIENTS
It is vitally important that your diet include the right types of each class of macronutrient:
- The right carbohydrates are either complex carbohydrates or fiber, and have a low-glycemic index. Complex carbohydrates and fiber generally supply additional healthy trace elements and phytonutrients, as well as energy.
- A healthy diet includes a variety of protein sources including complete proteins, which contain all of the essential amino acids.
- Beneficial fats are high in essential fatty acids and low in saturated fatty acids. No more than 10 percent of your total daily calories should be derived from saturated fat.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A LOW-FAT, HIGH-FIBER DIET
Soluble fiber, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. Low-fat diets rich in fiber-containing grain products, fruits, and vegetables may also reduce the risk of some types of cancer, a disease associated with many factors. Unfortunately, the normal diet in today's society includes only onehalf to two-thirds of the fiber necessary for optimal health. The positive impact of a highfiber diet is increased when there is a concurrent reduction in the amount of saturated fat consumed.
GLYCEMIC INDEX: WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
The glycemic index is a way of measuring the rate at which carbohydrates are broken down and appear in the blood as simple sugars. Those foods that result in a rapid rise in blood sugar have a high-glycemic index. Carbohydrates that are broken down slowly and cause only a moderate increase in blood sugar have a low-glycemic index. Some carbohydrates fall in between.
High-glycemic foods provide quick energy, but it is usually short lived and hunger soon returns. Low-glycemic foods provide greater satiety and sustained energy, which makes eating less and losing weight easier.
High-glycemic diets also have been linked to obesity, type II diabetes, insulin resistance, and heart disease. Virtually all convenience foods and many meal replacement and diet products on the market today are unfortunately, high glycemic.
USANA Foods
New USANA Foods are a healthy source of complex carbohydrates, complete proteins, and beneficial fats. SOYAMAX™, based on highquality soy protein, provides complete and balanced amino acids. And some USANA Foods, such as FIBERGY® and Iced Lemon FIBERGY BARS™, are low-fat, high-fiber foods. These delicious snack bars and drink mixes are formulated to be low glycemic to provide sustained energy throughout the day.
USANA Foods have been developed by USANA's team of scientists to help take the guesswork out of proper nutrition. These precision formulations not only provide the correct amounts of healthy carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, they also taste great and are convenient. More importantly, they will help you build a lasting foundation for true health for tomorrow.
Low-fat diets rich in dietary fiber may reduce the risk of some types of cancer, a disease associated with many factors. Diets low in saturated fat that include 25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk of heart disease. Diets containing foods that are a good source of potassium and that are low in sodium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.
